POBLE ESPANYOL: THE ARCHITECTURE OF AN ENTIRE COUNTRY, IN BARCELONA

A journey through heritage, craftsmanship, and history without leaving the city. Discover 117 unique buildings in a crowd-free environment.

Poble Espanyol was born as one of the major projects of the 1929 International Exposition. Like other iconic constructions such as the MNAC, the Greek Theatre, or the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion, our venue was created to show the world the soul of a country at a time when Barcelona was welcoming many visitors of different nationalities.

  • 117 buildings reproducing the architecture of the entire country.
  • 49,000 m² of enclosed and secure grounds.
  • From Romanesque to Baroque: an exhaustive journey through the diversity of the Peninsula.

THE PROJECT'S ORIGIN

A journey across the peninsula

Miquel Utrillo, Xavier Nogués, Francesc Folguera, and Ramon Reventós visited over 1,600 towns to document the constructive essence of each territory. The result is a perfect collage where you can walk from an Andalusian neighborhood to a Catalan Romanesque monastery in minutes. Although intended to be temporary, it made such an impact on the city that it was preserved as an enduring part of Barcelona’s heritage.

The exhibition “A Photographic Journey” offers exclusive access to the original 1927 photographs, letters, and sketches that brought the venue to life.

DID YOU KNOW…?
  • Tiles with history: 800,000 old tiles were brought from across the country to give the buildings an authentic, lived-in look.
  • Realism techniques: casts of real stones were used to exactly replicate the original textures and colors of each region.
  • Record time: more than 1,000 workers from across the country built it in less than a year, making it the first venue of the Exhibition ready for visitors.
